For farmers, weeding is both labor-intensive and time-consuming; this new technology holds promise in saving time and reducing the need for large-scale chemical spraying.
Dr. Emmanuel Zouzou, Senior Lecturer in Environmental Management and Sustainable Development at the Royal Agricultural University, stated: “In this way, it is possible to precisely pinpoint the location of weeds, which means that instead of applying pesticides or herbicides across the entire field, application can be targeted to specific areas only.”
He added, “This not only means a reduction in the release of herbicides and insecticides into the environment, but also lowers farm production costs.”
As some weeds have developed resistance to certain herbicides, there is hope that reducing the application rates of chemical formulations can help slow the emergence of resistance.
Currently, students at the university are working to train AI algorithms to accurately identify different types of weeds in crop fields. As crops grow taller, weeds often become obscured and difficult to detect.
Zuza said, “We are currently working to analyze various algorithms and how they accurately identify weeds in images.”
These models can also be trained to identify various pest species.
This research is currently being conducted on school-owned land, but will soon be piloted on commercially operated farms.
Zu Zha stated: “We have already contacted farmers in the vicinity of the university, and we will deploy drones at the appropriate time to examine how to conduct monitoring tailored to different types of crops.”
In China, new technologies are also boosting agriculture. According to a report by Harbin News Network, self-propelled intelligent laser weed-control robots have officially been deployed at farms in Harbin, Heihe, Qiqihar, and other cities. This “AI + laser + robotics” system can identify, locate, and scorch weeds in as little as 0.3 seconds, operating continuously day and night. The use of multiple autonomous intelligent technologies has effectively reduced labor requirements by 70%.
